Registering your lift

One of the most important things for the owner of a premises with a lift is ensuring the lift has been registered with WorkCover. The responsibility for registration falls upon the owners of the lift. This can cause some confusion with owners as it is mistakenly believed that the lift service provider registers the lift. Unfortunately, lift service providers are unable to do this as we only provide our services to maintain lifts, but, do not own the equipment.

To assist owners with the registration process, we are pleased to provide some important information about registering your plant.

The below information is for registering lift equipment that has just been installed and therefore has not yet been registered with WorkCover.

● First, go to the WorkCover website at www.worksafe.qld.gov.au and type “plant registration” into the search box.
● Once you are there, click on the second option titled “Form 8 – Application for registration of registrable plant”.
● Fill out the form with the relevant information about your lift equipment and the address where the lift is located.

For lifts that have previously been registered with WorkCover but now need their registration renewed, please see the following helpful steps. Please note that lifts need to be registered on an annual basis.
● First, go to the WorkCover website at www.worksafe.qld.gov.au and type “renewal of plant registration” into the search box.
● Once you are there, click on the first option titled “Apply to register plant or renew registration”.
● Then click on link titled “Online Renewal Application form”, which can be found under heading

“Renewal of Registration”.

● Once you are on this page you have to enter your owner number, serial number, and customer reference number. These three numbers can be found on the Renewal Notice that will be sent to you prior to registration expiration.
● Plant renewal must be completed prior to January 31 each year.

One of the sections on the Registration & Renewal application form is the annual Safe to Operate certificate. This form is provided by the lift service provider on an annual basis. At Thyssenkrupp we do not charge for this certificate; it is included in our services to assist owners when completing their registration.

Safety of your Lift

Some clarification needs to be brought to Committee members and Owners regarding the safety of your lift equipment that Technicians work on. Some of this clarification centers around the below two items.

1. Building Code of Australia – code items.

2. Lift specific safety items such as top of car rails and shaft lighting etc.

Although these are essentially the same thing, the confusion lays in the committee perceiving that they are separate issues and that the safety aspects for our technicians are a secondary issue. This perception is incorrect as the Executive Committee is in fact obligated under the code to ensure that the Lift that a qualified lift technician works on is safe to work on.

The above subject is one that is quite detailed and can vary depending on what type of elevator technology is installed at your premises. This information above can be a good starting point to review what is safety items are required for your lift.

If you would like to find out more regarding the above, then please feel free to call me on my details provided below.
