The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) CEO Antonia Mercorella has now been named a finalist in the prestigious 2024 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards in recognition of her leadership and business acumen.

Making history as the first female and youngest leader of the REIQ in its century-long history, Ms Mercorella has been credited with transforming the Institute into one of the most progressive and high-profile professional peak bodies in Australia.

Her visionary leadership has earned her a place as one of four finalists in The Courier-Mail Business Person of the Year Award category, with the winner to be announced on Friday, 25 October 2024.

REIQ Chairman Peter Brewer congratulated Ms Mercorella on this worthy recognition of her profound impact on both the real estate sector and the broader community.

“Antonia’s strong personal, humanitarian and social justice values, shaped by her experiences as the daughter of Italian migrants, are at the heart of her tireless efforts in business and beyond,” Mr Brewer said.

“She has shattered glass ceilings and set new standards in diversity and equality, dramatically improving the governance and culture of the REIQ, while inspiring young people from all backgrounds to seize career and life opportunities.

“Under Antonia’s leadership, the REIQ has undergone a remarkable revitalisation evolving it into the modern, profitable, influential and widely recognised organisation it is today.

“Antonia’s influence is also felt in her community work, including her roles as an Ambassador for The Forgotten Women and former Board Director of the Sycamore School.

“Her exemplary character, incredible courage and tenacity in creating positive change make her an inspiring leader and worthy of being recognised through such a prestigious honour as the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.”

Mr Brewer said that the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards recognise local leaders who have left an indelible mark on Brisbane through their business achievements.

“Antonia’s advocacy for a sustainable real estate market, her steady leadership through the COVID-19 pandemic, her support for the burgeoning proptech community, and her dedication to addressing homelessness and disadvantage have all greatly contributed to the well-being of Brisbane,” he said.

Ms Mercorella, who celebrates 10 years as CEO of the REIQ this year, began her journey with the Institute in 2010 as Legal Counsel before assuming the top role in 2014. Originally from South Australia and a lawyer by profession, she has become a leading voice in Queensland’s real estate sector, playing a pivotal role in shaping property-related legislation and driving a relentless pursuit of best practice professionalism in real estate.

The full list of finalists is now listed on the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards page.
